Buyer's Guide: Earmuffs

What Earmuffs Can Do for You

Earmuffs are PPE or protective clothing accessories that fit over an individual's ears for better hearing or for extra warmth, as well as for protection from the outside world. They are similar to ear muffs, but are more loosely fitted to prevent air leaks. They usually consist of a metal or thermoplastic head-strap, which fits tightly around the back or top of the head, a cover or cup on each side, and over the exterior ears. Most Earmuffs have a zipper to seal them closed. There are also some Earmuffs that have both a head-strap and a cup. These are commonly called a multi-style Earmuff.

Earmuffs come in a variety of colors, designs, and styles. Some feature a snap closure at the top of the headband, which also aids with keeping them secure on the head. The majority of headbands snap into place with a simple push on the strap, but there are some models that feature an integrated hook & loop fastening system, which is not as convenient but offers a little more versatility. Most Earmuffs feature elasticized tips that pull slightly inward against the ear canal. The ear cups are generally made of synthetic plastic, but may be custom molded to fit your own personal ears. Ear cushions may be used to further improve the fit.

Earmuffs work to reduce echoes and ambient noise by closing off the canal that connects the ear to the outer world. However, not all Earmuffs work equally. There are two main types of noise attenuating earmuffs - open and closed. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Most Earmuffs will work well for most people. Earmuffs can be worn with prescription hearing aids. Earmuffs will make any device work more accurately and help keep ambient noises from invading the ears and masking the sounds of the wearer's music. Some Earmuffs will have a seal that can be adjusted so that the ears can be sealed tighter or further removed from the noise cancelling headphones.

Closed Earmuffs have a seal that can be further sealed to help prevent noises from entering the ear cup. These ear muffs are great if the wearer has trouble with the sealing mechanism of an open Earmuff. This way, the Earmuffs will work more accurately but will not seal off the ear cups to prevent dust, debris, or other noises from entering and masking the sounds of the wearer's music. Some Earmuffs will have ear cushions that can be used to further isolate the ears.

For some people, choosing the right Earmuffs is a matter of personal preference. A good fit and comfort is important to many people. Earmuffs have been created specifically with this in mind. Earmuffs manufacturers have taken all the precautions to ensure that the ear muffs provide a high level of sound isolation to ensure the best possible sound quality while still providing minimal noise exposure. Earmuffs with superior comfort and fit are also more likely to provide the level of hearing protection required.

Low-frequency noise exposure is especially problematic for many people who wear hearing protectors. Earmuffs can offer significant noise reduction benefits by allowing the wearer to enjoy music without the annoying levels of low-frequency noise normally associated with wearing a hearing protector. Since Earmuffs typically do not have as much low-frequency noise reduction benefits as ear muffs, it is likely that some people will still want to use their hearing protectors. For these people, Earmuffs offer an excellent alternative to the poor fit and comfort of low-frequency hearing aides.

Earmuffs have been designed for several different listening environments including professional sports, entertainment, television, or any other type of environment that requires the use of hearing protection. Earmuffs have a snug fit and lightweight so they are comfortable to wear even when one has to stand for long periods of time or during intense activity. Earmuffs have been created especially with active individuals in mind so they do not create excess noise when individuals are engaged in activities such as running or jogging. Earmuffs provide superior sound quality and comfort with zero distortion or background sounds.
